Prosthodontics – the replacement or restoration of natural teeth.
Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning and rehabilitation of the oral function restoration of oral function by creating prostheses and restorations i.e., complete dentures, crowns, implant retained/supported restorations.
Teeth are likely to need some form of treatment at some stage that for most this will be a filling here or there. As damaged teeth contribute to a decline in the overall dentition of the mouth this can have a knock-on effect on the surrounding muscles and the jaw – it can even induce headaches. Therefore sometimes there may be a need for more extensive treatment.
Treatments include repairing wear and tear, or replacing lost teeth or fitting dentures depending on your requirements.
As people are growing older and keeping their teeth longer, wear has become more of a problem for dentists to deal with. The prosthodontist will intervene, as early as possible, to restore the appearance and function of the teeth.
The Clinic understands that it can be very traumatic to lose teeth, so making sure that prompt treatment can be administered is important. As there are a range of treatments to replace or restore teeth, such as implants, crowns, veneers or bridge work, the Clinic believes that involving the patient in choosing the shape and colour of the teeth is very important.
When dentures are required it is vital that they fit the patient well. Badly fitting dentures can adversely affect our confidence as well as being painful. The prosthodontist will work painstakingly to ensure that the patient has a totally secure fit. Techniques are used to make the dentures look as natural as possible – so that the patient is 100% confident about the look and function of the denture.
