Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ)

When the mouth is closed, the way the teeth sit together is called occlusion. Ideally, the occlusion is in harmony with the jaws, temporo-mandibular joints (TMJs) and the chewing muscles. However, very few people are lucky enough to have this ideal harmony and many people suffer from discomfort due to the occlusion.

Some of the symptoms are head, neck and shoulder pains, clicking sounds or pain around the ear, or simply wear and tear of the teeth caused by clenching and grinding.

The treatment of these problems is to replace any missing teeth and create a harmonious occlusion. In the first instance this is achieved with a special hard-plastic mouth-guard and later transferred directly to the teeth by a correction procedure called ‘equilibration’, which may entail replacement of unsatisfactory restorations.
